Walter Foxx, Happening Beach, California’s most feared bar brawler, works at Sea Lion Beach Liquor at night, attends Wong Beach State College in the day, and dishes out street justice in his spare time to the scumbags, posers, wannabes, and bullies of the world who violate his personal code of honor. Driving a 1987 Chevy Sprint with his faithful pit bull Adolf riding shotgun, Walter and his twisted crew of Poppa Chulo, Rolando, Big Cal, and Gonzo hold court at the Dead Grunion bar where they take on all comers. When Walter sees a man beating his girlfriend one night and steps in to assist her, he gets punched for his trouble and makes the perp pay. The man has friends in high places, though, and Walter soon finds himself facing felony assault charges that his 600 pound bench-press-fueled fighting skills alone can’t beat. As he battles liars on the stand and his own hapless attorney John Wittless in a desperate bid to clear his name and avoid prison, Walter struggles to understand what his life means and what his future holds. Author David "Tank" Abbott, the “Huntington Beach Bad Boy” and the world’s most famous brawler, had over 200 street fights before bursting onto the MMA scene in 1995 when he shocked the world by defeating larger opponents with crushing ferocity inside the cage to become a household name. He later went on to star in the most watched “Friends” episode of all time before becoming a fixture at Ted Turner’s World Championship Wrestling where he quickly became one of its most recognizable and popular personalities. He later returned to the cage with his trademark intensity, leaving an indelible and enduring legacy. This seminal three-novel work chronicles the adventures of fictional character Walter Foxx, who is at the crossroads of his life and who navigates the harsh worlds of bar brawling and street fighting with the goal of living his dream and following his passion and someday becoming a no-holds-barred fighter. Written from the ultimate insider’s perspective, Tank Abbott takes readers from the parking lot to the cage with a realism and honesty about mixed martial arts never before told or exposed − until now!

Is Tank Abbott MMA's Charles Bukowski?
By jarborra
I read Bar Brawler for the Co-Main Event (#CME if you nasty) Podcast book club. I didn't know what to expect, I really didn't. But at least Tank Abbott got published so how bad could it be? Then one of the co-hosts tweeted "it's not 'good' by any means". With my expectations suitably lowered, I dove into my Kindle edition. No, it wasn't good but it was... something. Gripping, exciting, stupefyingly compelling: I had to read more. I tweeted the other co-host "I hope he beats someone up in every chapter". As he responded, I certainly wasn't disappointed on that count.
With most chapters starting with the incessant "beep! beep! beep!" of Tank's, sorry Walter's, alarm and our protagonist then seemingly going through a Groundhog Day-like existence it all started to run together. The use of the present tense added to the tedium: wrestling his dog Adolf, riding the duct-taped Interceptor to the gym, hitting the heavy bag, working at the liquor store, cracking open a clip of "soldiers", making a "siren", cruising with a member of "Kaos" and then - inevitably, brutally - beating someone senseless outside a bar.
As much as I rooted for Walter to give the next loser the beat-down he was "begging for", I also found my distaste for him as a human being growing. Every evening he plots a new felony assault. Every day he drives desperately drunk.
But somehow, I also recognized the style: the kitchen-sink alcoholism and relentless monotony. Then I realized: Walter Foxx is to Tank Abbott what Hank Chinaski is to Charles Bukowski! In many respects, Bar Brawler is Abbott's 'Ham On Rye' or 'Factotum'. Don't get me wrong, there is a vast difference in literary standard but the similarity is there. Maybe Bukowski is even what Abbott was aiming for?
Regardless, I am a fan. And I'm definitely buying 'Street Fighter' and 'Cage Fighter' when they come out.

You get what you expect
By adolf
well if your familiar with tank abbott, you get what you expect but nothing more. the main character gets drunk, fights, moans about life, hates on people. repeat this for 300 pages and you have the "novel" that is "Bar Brawler". The dialogue is really stiff and the book pretty repetitive. Alot of this book comes off unintentionally funny; everyone seems to be "begging" for a beating in the authors eyes. i used to be a bigger fan of tank, but after this he seems really obnoxious.
If this is to be the begining of a trilogy its a weak start.
although i still give it a positive review overall due to still being a tank fan, not having read a book anything like this, and i did enjoyed all the street scraps with in the book.
It is what it is.

Interesting...but writing prowess lacking...
By C. Waterhouse
As a long time MMA fan since 1993 (UFC 1) I was very interested in this book. This man (tank) is a ferocious warrior and I suspected this "fictional" account was actually his own life story thinly disguised. The book is full of fight/brawl stories and keeps you reading. The one drawback to the book is the authors lack of writing prowess. By that I mean he is very primitive in the way he words his story. It is a blunt, raw story about a beast that lives for fighting. If you were a fan of the early UFC, I would recommend this book.
