About the Author
Ben Counter is the author of the Soul Drinkers and Grey Knights series, along with two Horus Heresy novels, and is one of Black Library's most popular Warhammer 40,000 authors. He has written RPG supplements and comic books. He is a fanatical painter of miniatures, a pursuit which has won him his most prized possession: a prestigious Golden Demon award. He lives in Portsmouth, England. Guy Haley is the author of the Space Marine Battles novel Death of Integrity, as well as Skarsnik and Baneblade, and the Horus Heresy audio drama 'Hunter's Moon'. He worked for many years on magazines, including Games Workshop's White Dwarf. Since 2009 he has been a wandering writer, working in both magazines and novels. He lives in Somerset with his wife and son.

Coping with Ork invasions

This title is a collection of eight short stories and novella which tend to go two by two.

The first two, for instance, are about the Obsidian Glaives’ Chapter, and their heroic but doomed resistance against waves of invading Orks while defending their fortress-monastery. I particularly liked the first of these in which the Chapter unleashes its most precious treasuries and relics of its glorious past (I will let you find out what exactly these treasures are!) in an attempt to turn the tide.

The next two short stories are about hives of the planet Ghul Jensen, one attacked by Orks while the other was the victim of an uprising by a sect imitating Orks. It is besieged by loyal Imperial Guard forces trying to recover control of it before the real Ork invasion takes place. Again, I particularly liked this second story because of a certain Imperial character send on a suicide mission.

Stories five and six are my favourite. They are perhaps the most original of the collection and are also somewhat amusing. This is they are both told from the perspective of the Orks themselves. Their rather interesting dialogues and names are likely to make you smile. One of these stories also includes a rather superb battle between Garguants – the Orks giant machines that are the equivalents of imperial Titans. Another great scene is the battle between the Ork machines and the mechanical Knights of Alaric Prime. The main original feature, however, is a rather fascinating story about Ork “Mekbosses”. These make up what is perhaps the most dangerous component of the Orkish forces because they are innovative and one of these will in affect take control of the invading force before the end of the story.

Fans of the Space Wolves will be particularly gratified by the last two stories, both of which include Ragnar Blackmane and his Great Company. The fist story is about a squad of Space Wolves and its Rune Priest in particular that are chased up a sacred mountain (hence the novella’s title “Blood on the Mountain”) and hunted by a horde of Orks lead by a possessed gigantic one. A particularly interesting feature is that this Ork “warboss” has enslaved a Knight by using the Powers from Chaos. Those linking stories with war psykers are likely to appreciate this one. The second story features the same Rune Priest (one Ulli Iceclaw) reporting on a battle where the impetuous Lord Ragnar Blackmane had to be bailed out by Lord Grimnar himself and his Wolf Guard (all in Terminator armour and fur pelts, of course).

Out of these eight stories, readers (myself included) will find some more likeable than others. I did not, however, find any real weak ones. I would probably have rated this collection something like 4.6 or 4.7 stars if this had been possible. Since it is not, I will go for five stars, because I feel that four stars would be somewhat harsh.

About the Author

Gayle H. Gregory is first and foremost a teacher, having experienced teaching and learning in elementary, middle, and secondary schools, community colleges, and universities. Lin Kuzmich, of KCS, Inc., is an educational consultant, professor, and author from Loveland, CO. She served the Thompson School District in several roles as the assistant superintendent, executive director of secondary and elementary instruction, director of professional development, and a building principal. Her school was named a 2000 winner of the John R. Irwin Award for Academic Excellence and Improvement. In addition, for the past decade she has been involved in staff development through several universities and the Tointon Institute for Educational Change. Kuzmich is an adjunct professor at both Colorado State University and University of Northern Colorado. She is a senior consultant for the International Center for Leadership in Education, has provided training and consulting to school districts around the country, and has presented at numerous national conferences.

I heard Dean speak to one of my Convene CEO small groups...he left behind copies of his book for the CEOs. I immediately scheduled Dean to come back and speak to all of my groups. Many of the audience commented that it was the best, most helpful talk they have heard since joining Convene. I also was so convinced that the book would promote growth in each of my members, I personally invested in purchasing each of them a book of their own to keep.
While reading my copy, I was inspired to attach a Bible verse to each page, because the proverbial value of each piece of wisdom had a spiritual element. I ran the sayings through that grid and was pleased with the product.

Ashwin Pajankar is a Bangalore-based software professional with more than 5 years of experience in software design, development, testing, and automation. He graduated from IIT Hyderabad with an MTech degree in computer science and engineering. He holds multiple professional certifications from Oracle, IBM, Teradata, and ISTQB in development, databases, and testing. Apart from work, he enjoys serving the community. Good introduction to image processing but lacking in clear instructions ...

Good introduction to image processing but lacking in clear instructions as to how to install OpenCV on the Raspberry Pi. The speciific modules that need to be installed are not explained in detail. This is a key detail the author did not address so that a newbee to Linux could follow his directions and start running Open CV. I had to do research on Google to get the answers to this problem. One had hoped this text would provide the installation details and avoid hours of searching.

A useful and helpful book, but not for very beginners.

I have bought many Packt books covering various topics in the past, and had very mixed feelings about this book.

Firstly it was very helpful in setting up OpenCV on the raspberry pi, which I had previously had a lot of trouble with before purchasing this book. After following the instructions of this book though, I was up and running without any problems.

One very annoying thing about this book was that it lists 72 packages to install, with instructions on how to install one package at a time. Nothing else. I imagine this would be a nightmare for a beginner with no experience with the linux command shell. BE WARNED! Find out how to install them all automatically...

In this sense, some parts of the book feel like it was lazily put together. Some chapters give a very gentle introduction to some concepts, while others go into a lot of detail, somewhat needlessly.

Nevertheless I found the book to be very helpful in setting up OpenCV the Pi and testing out some of the features. Other chapters I didn't bother with. I would recommend this book to people who have some experience with the Pi, after buying the camera board, but not as a first project.

Not much here

Overall this book needs work. The writing is poor, with bad punctuation and overly simple descriptions. The code examples are even worse, demonstrating poor style that makes it difficult to read, occasionally using reserved words for variable names. I recommend the editors have somebody make it pep8-compliant for the next release.

The setup and installation instructions in chapter 1 are sloppy and clearly not tested. The book instructs you to install 72 different packages "one-by-one", two of which are no longer valid and one of which-- "python-opencv" itself-- it instructs you to install again after the list of 72 packages. A shell script in a Github repository or a wget-able location would make this simple. In its current state, it's tedious.

The examples are straightforward but are offered without much commentary. Much of the book is filled with unnecessarily large images. Some examples use images not included in the example image repositories!

Over all, it is an adequate introduction to some basic image processing methods but only explores a few (very simple) computer vision topics.
