A Page-turner in the Best Sense

I was mesmerized. Of course I knew the end, but it started at the perfect place and I loved the opening and closing chapters from the young guard's point of view. Throughout, there are such beautiful details of how they lived in each stage, including before the fall - and then the journeys, the houses, the whole downward spiral, with heartbreaking bright spots - how they learn to ask for less and less and yet keep hoping that somehow this will end well. Marie is a great narrator and you see more and more complexity in her, and in other characters as she writes about them, especially her father. The details of the end are horrifying and completely human as told from the boy's perspective.

It really is a page-turner in the best sense - no gimmicks, just a great, suspenseful story, a fascinating world, and a tremendously compelling narrator.

Gorgeous writing!

This literary page-turner channels the voice of Anastasia's older sister Marie in a stunning retelling of the last days of imperial Russia. While the Revolution rages outside, Marie and her parents flee the Winter Palace. After a heart-stopping journey, she's reunited with her beloved sisters in the House of Special Purpose, and the family begins a kind of eerie half-life within its walls, not knowing what lies ahead, but trying to make the most of their stolen time. Highly recommended for lovers of historical fiction, doomed romance, and beautiful prose.

Excellent!

Having a long time interest in these times and this family, I can't say how impressed with Ms. Roses novel. Factually correct with all the humanity and emotion woven through it--emotions you experienced with Marie and the family. I had to put it down several times, take a break and a breath, only to pick it back up again.
I took the day off today with plans to get out for a much needed road trip, meaning to put it aside and head out. By two in the afternoon I had finished the book and had already rationalized that I'd go tomorrow--when it was sunnier...because I knew I couldn't go until I finished it.
The author mentions that on July 18, 2018 is the 100th year anniversary of their deaths. Oh, how I'd love to go.
My recommendation? Absolutely, it weaves all the facts together in the style of a personal journal and brings them to beautiful and painful life.

First published in Brazil in 1988 as Turning the Tables , this book was the all-time best-selling nonfiction book in Brazil's history. Semler, the 34-year-old CEO, or "counselor," of Semco, a Brazilian manufacturing firm, describes how he turned his successful company into a "natural business" in which employees hire and evaluate their bosses, dress however they want, participate in major decisions, and share in 22 percent of the profits. Semler believes that Semco is different from most companies that have participatory management because employees are given the power to make decisions--even ones, with which the CEO wouldn't normally agree. Semler claims, "This is not a business book. It is a book about work, and how it can be changed for the better." Highly recommended.

In a sometimes breathless, often boyish manner, Semler, a counselor of a Brazilian company (Semco), relates the transformation of a traditionally structured business into one quite literally without walls and rules. Semler details his not-so-easy steps in the metamorphosis: abolishing dress codes and regulations; decentralizing plants; getting rid of paperwork and titles (hence, his appellation as counselor, not CEO); and creating a consultative democracy in which employees set their own salaries and work hours and vote on managerial candidates, among other responsibilities. If it sounds too much like utopia, Semler admits that Brazil's economic downturn has impacted Semco and that, yes, being born with a silver spoon certainly colors his vision. My Favorite Business Book Ever

I must have bought people 20 copies of this book...at least. This book is the best distillation of what democracy, honesty, transparency and courage look like in the workplace. They produce spectacular financial result and deep fulfillment for the employees. I read this book in 2006 or earlier for the first time and I keep coming back to it over and over again. Although his business is a complex manufacturing business, you can apply the lessons here to small or large companies, sales organizations, restaurants, tech companies and non-profits. The book is radical...and surprisingly revolutionary. It also makes you realize, by describing in such detail what an ultra high trust work environment looks like, how much of our workplaces treat us like dishonest children...and we often fulfill those expectations. I don't say it lightly...but this book was life changing and still in for me...

First 100 pages were great

I really liked the first 1/3 of this book up to page 100. But then past that I was struggling to finish it. I kept pushing myself to read a few more pages with hopes that it would get better. But finally stopped around page 200 and then skimmed through the remainder. The first part was great because it covers the authors story of running the company traditionally and then implementing a lot of the new policies. Which was very thought provoking and pretty amazing considering this was over 25 years ago.

After page 100 each chapter covered a story about hiring someone or moving them to another department. Or implementing something else. And it just became really boring and drawn out for me. And when he writes about subsidizing lunches for workers making less money, and allowing employees to set their own salaries based on things like living expenses it comes across to be a bit socialist leaning. And I don't mean that in a good or bad way. On the first page the author writes that it's not purely capitalistic or socialist. He writes that it's a new way. A third way. And it seems like that third way has borrowed tenets from each.

Anyway, This book should be read to challenge your current thinking and to read about a more democratic work environment. Even if you only make it to page 100. It should not be read as a complete guide for a company or as if everything covered is the absolute best way to do things.

The start of a new era?????

I bought this book because I read about Semco and what its boss had created.
From what I heard he had created a workplace that was democratic, fun to work at and all in all a good lesson of how companies can be run. So, when I found out he had written a book about it, I wanted to read it.

And I was not disappointed. He describes clearly and with great detail how he transformed his fathers company from a bureaucratic, top-down run company into a much more democratic and fun workplace. And it all started with allowing employees to vote on which color uniforms they want.

All in all, I love this book. It seems to be part of a new era about working differently from the past. Perhaps era is not the right word, but movement might be a better description. Other elements in this movement are ROWE from Jodi Thompson and Cali Ressler, Beyond Budgeting, Alexander Kjerulf with his Positive Sharing website as being the Chief Happiness Officer, Tim Ferriss with his Four Hour Workweek, the guys from 37signals and many others.

I have collected quite a few cooking books over the years and this one is a great addition. Plenty of great Christmas dishes. Some classics with modern twists and some completely new ones for me. The book is very beautifully presented with lots of mouth-watering pictures and clear, detailed preparation instructions. Typically for Gordon you get some very fancy and complicated dishes that take time and some skill to prepare. However, there is also plenty for the occasional inexperienced cook. What I like is that there are complete Christmas menus to choose from with dishes that go together very well. Each menu has a planning section to help you prepare ahead and organise your time efficiently. Again, typically for Gordon there isn't much faffing about just straight to the point to get things done. Just how a cooking book should be.

Very happy with my purchase and I cannot wait to try some of the recipes so Christmas might come early this year.

Making Christmas Dinner just got Easy!

Well written and beautiful photographs. Gordon Ramsay splits the book into chapters by Christmas meal favorites and tells you how to prepare the "dinner". So whether you have turkey, ham, beef wellington, or fish...he has your menu. The last few chapters shows you what to do the morning after for breakfast and how to tackle left overs. He sprinkles desserts and cocktails/drinks throughout as well. Highly recommend.

With a few exceptions, this book is easy to follow and has some fantastic recipes. The book came in in good order and is filled with beautiful pictures. The only thing I'd like to see is a conversion chart for the metric/english measurements.
