KRISHNA, by Ramesh Menon

This is a magical, unexpurgated life of Krishna, told in a spirit of bhakti for the modern reader.
The book opens on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, on the brink of war, when the great Pandava warrior Arjuna suffers a crisis of courage and conscience. His divine cousin and charioteer, Krishna, begins to expound the eternal dharma to him. The exposition between two teeming armies is the Bhagavad-Gita, the Song of God.
The story shifts back to Krishna's birth, and then again to the battlefield; and so on, from his Gita to the Avatara's life, until both narratives flow together, just before the Great War erupts.
Never before have Krishna's holy Gita (from the Mahabharata) and his brilliant, unforgettable life (from the Bhagavata Purana) been juxtaposed so vividly and with such enchantment as in this book.

Ramesh Menon has written several widely read books in the Great Indian Tradition. These include the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, the Siva Purana, the Devi Bhagavatam, and the Bhagavata Purana. He has also translated the Bhagavad Gita in verse from the Sanskrit in a separate volume.

One of the Earthly Lifetimes of the Great God
By Sylvia Hawley
Mostly I think this is abstracted from Menon's version of Bhagavata Purana which itself is a glorious wonderful read. The story of Krishna's birth, boyhood, love life, kingship, his sea city, his role in the Mahabharata and his recitation of the magnificent Gita, the Song of God, are all beyond description in words for their beauty and power to enlighten and reassure,

Fabulous
By Denise Dziwak
I had red the Mahabharata but this one goes deeper into krishna's life and origins helping the reader I am connect with him deeply .... I felt relieved by the story as if the story was within my own humanity and yet I was part of Him.... Beautifully written
Thanks

It's a great story and I loved the writing
By Squeaky D
It's a great story and I loved the writing, but half of it reads like a religious text. You would do just as well to read the Baghavad Gita, though this version is much shorter.

DO NOT BUY OR RENT. Especially if you need it for class.
By Jenna Howe
I rented this book for my English 1302 class and it was completely useless. This "compact" version does not have all the stories the physical addition does and they do not offer the full version of the book in an E-book. I tried to read "A Rose for Emily" which is in the table of contents, and when you get to the page number it's just four blank pages telling you the story isn't in the book. WHAT THE HELL GUYS!?! I'm really pissed that I spent my money on renting this useless book. I had to drive an hour and a half to go rent the full version from a book store and it cost me $80.
My other issue is I was on the page for the full edition of this book, clicked the kindle edition and it switches from full version to compact version with out any warning. I thought I was renting the full version. So great job Amazon for screwing me out of my money.

College is a scam
By Jon
I'm spending $45 to rent this useless book for college despite the fact that all of the stories in it can be found online for free by googling their titles. I only needed the book in order to reference the correct page numbers.

Ebook version is worthless.
By BM5k
Ebook Table of Contents doesn't link to actual pages, which totally defeats the purpose of having a digital copy. Don't waste your money.

It's Probably Nothing continues the tale woven by Dr. Beach Conger in his first book, Bag Balm and Duct Tape. This new collection sees Conger and his wife yearning for new challenges and relocating to the suburbs of Philadelphia after 25 years in mythical Dumster, Vermont. Conger gamely takes a job in a teaching hospital in the poorest part of the city and gets to experience urban bureaucratized medicine and its trials- a far cry from the more idiosyncratic and hands-on version he practiced in Vermont. After 5 years Conger and his wife move back to Dumster, where he rediscovers more about his patients' capacity to both cope and cherish one another than he expected.

Each of the tightly constructed chapters is centered around a particular patient or particular theme in medicine. It's Probably Nothing is both funny and poignant, and showcases both Conger's irreverent view into medicine and his profound empathy for the characters he encounters along the way. His experience highlights how medicine-and problems with out current medical system-can remain the same and yet be vastly different across class, race, and region. Among the people the reader meets are urban drag queens, small-town farmers and other heroes, Vermont celebrities, and the occasional reclusive author.

Booklist-
Whether floundering as a fish out of water in an inner-city Philadelphia hospital or explaining C-reactive protein (CRP) to a patient, if Conger appears to be an iconic iconoclast, so much the better. Because, as a "senior" physician, he is no more likely to allow a superfluous, if expensive, technology to get in the way of his hands-on method of diagnosis than he is to let so trifling a thing as a fact hinder a good yarn. The way he tells it, truth does not suffer facts. And Conger's truth doesn't suffer at all. It is biting where the pompous beg to be taken down; it is wry, witty, and deprecating regarding himself and modern health care; and it is respectful of the patients he tends. Truly a lover of the written word, Conger wraps his stories in language that is loving and engagingly imaginative-for a doctor, that is. By capturing the essence of individuals such as a Norma Lebrec or a C. Frederick Selkirk in his literary embrace, Conger portrays folks we all either know or would like to know.

"It's Probably Nothing is actually quite wonderful. With wit and humility, but above all with deep affection, Beach Conger captures perfectly what it is to be a Vermonter. This book is a must-read for doctors and patients alike."--Peter Welch, US Representative, Vermont

"Dr. Beach Conger's It's Probably Nothing is the inspiring tale of a fine and caring physician's life and times in two places that could scarcely be more different: rural Vermont and inner-city Philadelphia. Written with great humor, wisdom, common sense, and compassion, It's Probably Nothing is a uniquely American memoir by a very insightful American individualist. I loved it."--Howard Frank Mosher, author of Walking to Gatlinburg

"Doctor Conger is back again! But this time deeper, warmer, and suffused with the notion that there's no hurry; each Vermont story is too good to be rushed. You can see them coming, but you can't stop ambling with him to the conclusions. It's Probably Nothing is his best collection yet.--Willem Lange, writer, A Yankee Notebook; commentator and host, VPR and NHPTV; author, A Dream of Dragons

Book News-
In this follow-up to his first memoir on practicing in rural Vermont, Harvard Medical School graduate Conger moves from the farm to inner-city Philadelphia, where he treats patients who struggle for food, shelter, and safety. After five years, he returns to the isolated rural community of Dummerston, Vermont. Conger describes humorous encounters with various offbeat patients; on the more serious side, he reflects on problems of our healthcare system. The author now teaches at Dartmouth Medical School.

Humorous Allegories About A Small Town Medical Practice
By D_shrink
I found this to be a delightful and humorous account of the life of typical small town medical doctor facing real everyday problems, not the hectic and dramatic but totally false events shown in movie or TV medical dramas. The author tells his story as sort of the Marcus Welby, MD of the fictional town of Dumster, VT which is a stand in for Windsor, VT. The good doctor appears to be a rather self-deprecating person, although learned having graduated from Harvard Medical School, and later worked at UC Berkeley Hospital system,Grady in Atlanta, Temple in Philadelphia plus being an adjunct professor at Dartmouth. I see the author as sort of Garrison Keillor transplanted to Vermont.

But let me say that I agree with some of the other reviewers that the chosen names for some of the characters in these allegorical sketches do get a bit grating after a while. Some examples are Paul and Melinda Barker-Purris for the husband and wife vet team, Muriel Goode and Olive Best for the spinster sisters who lived together for so many years that you couldn't tell them apart, plus too many others to mention, but you get the idea. However, all that aside, they are but minor points in the entirety of what the author has to say, and I think he says it quite well. The book is really a series of homilies and even a soliloquy or two thrown in for good measure; there is a strong moral perspective throughout. The writing is humorous without being of the belly laugh variety, but more of a humorous bent. My favorite chapter came late in the book and was called AMERICANITIS, in which the author tries to explain to a hypochondriacal patient how the psychiatric/psychological disorder/symptom of neurasthenia has morphed into the more modern term Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

You won't roll on the floor laughing, but I think most people will enjoy the humor without any four-letter words used, and may actually see what life for a small town doctor is really like. A similar book but with individual accounts from a myriad of practitioners in various locales that I also thoroughly enjoyed was THE COUNTRY DOCTOR REVISITED edited by Therese Zink, MD.

Taking The Long Way Home
By prisrob
Dr Beach Conger writes about his life as a physician, the people he treats and the communities he lives in. He is disparaging of medical centers and specialists in particular. He prefers to be in control of the kind of medicine he practices, and that is the philosophy of most physicians. But, this is the modern times, like it or not, and it seems Dr Conger is not going to change even a little bit with the times.

Dr Conger and wife moved from California to Vermont after reading a year or two of 'Vermont Life'. This seemed to be the area that fit them the best. Dr Conger wanted to practice medicine the 'real way', and his wife wanted to go to Law School. All was happy for several years until Dr Conger and his wife decided they wanted to work in the big city for awhile. They chose Philadelphia and this was not a wise choice, none of the old 'only one physician' in charge here. Dr Conger didn't quite fit in. Back to Vermont where stories of his patients are told through semi-factual characters. Dr Conger, though self deprecating at times, seems to know the answer to all that is wrong with the medical profession these days. Those stories get very old for the reader. This is not the charming tale of a country physician and his Vermont patients, but more a practicum of his philosophy of what medical practice should be. Not an enjoyable read.

Not my Cup of Tea at All
By Avid reader
Was anticipating a series of amusing stories, and they just weren't there. Lot of political position statements made, and I did agree fully with many of them; but just could stick with the story. Was bored, bored and finally just bailed. It did not entertain me enough to try and finish it.

Another Good Children of the Moon Book.
By Readergirl
I have loved Lucy Monroe's Children of the Moon series and this one didn't disappoint. Very good.

Shona, a non-Foal (shapeshifting wolf) is rejected by her mate Caelis after he is convinced by the laird and alpha of the clan that she isn't his actual true mate. She and her family leave the clan and she is forced to marry a baron. The story begins 6 years later when the Baron has died and she is on the run from her step son who would like to turn her into his mistress. She's on her way to Balmoral Island to seek refuge with distant relatives when she crosses Sinclair land and then is taken to the castle. There she meets up with Caelis.

We see some appearances from other couples in the series before which was nice. Talorc and Abigail remain a favorite of mine so it was great to see them.

I really liked this story and the characters. It was nice to see that mistakes were made...responsibility took...and characters move on from that. It wasn't minimized, but it also wasn't dwelt on to the point of being irritating. It was well-written. I liked the story and enjoyed the depth of the characters. There was no 'instant forgiveness' for wrongs. Instead it was a natural progression. The story seemed very romantic and the world Monroe has created with her highland shape-shifters is interesting. I highly recommend the book and look forward to seeing others in this series continue to come out.

Really Disappointed
By AJ
I absolutely love the series. Every time I see a new book is coming out, I pre-order it. I was so excited to read this book. I was sorely disappointed. Warrior's Moon lacked everything a good book needs--great characters, a plot, and good writing.

To be quite frank, the characters were annoying. They jumped from one side of the Mississippi to the other on almost everything, including their feelings for one another. And I don't mean the kind of feelings that characters are working through. I mean it looked like this, "I hate you. No wait. I kind of like you. Nope, I lied. You're really annoying. Stop that. Shoo. Go away. Why did you leave me? What is wrong with you?...." and so on. It was tedious to read.

As for the plot...there was none. Nothing happened. At all. There was talk of something happening, but it was over faster than you could say, "Quidditch." Hopefully, Monroe remembers to include something exciting in the next book in the series.

And now to get to the writing. Honestly, it didn't feel like a Lucy Monroe novel. I re-read the series before reading this book to get myself back in the groove of things. Not even 20 pages in and I was confused. Who wrote this book? Why was there constantly a mention of "gentian" blue eyes? The redundancy was a give away. Also, the vocabulary was unfitting of the story. Every other book included vocabulary that anyone reading the books could understand. Why? Because writing in its most simplest form is the best it can be. The inclusion of difficult vocabulary had me placing down the book and completely avoiding reading. I read all the time. My vocabulary has expanded tremendously as a result of that habit and my being an English major. But some of those words were as foreign to me as could be.

Simply put, this book was a complete and utter disappointment. I want to read a book by Lucy Monroe, not some poorly skilled shadow writer that picked up the series from her.

huge fan of this series but book one remains king
By Bookswagger
Shona is human and her mate a wolf, who turned away from her because she did not have a wolf. Now she is a widow running from her stepson back to her highland relatives. Before she can make it back to her family she is faced with Caelis, her mate who let her go for being human at their Lairds demand. Now things have changed, he expects to claim her and his children as if he never threw their bond away.

I am a huge fan of this series but book one remains king, although this one was pretty good. Shona is now a widow, her wicked Baron dead and who should she run into on Sinclair land but her mate Caelis. Right! I loved it, we all love it, that is why we read romance. Caelis is arrogant and just expects her to still admit her love for him. After all she is a peace-loving feisty lass just like he remembers. Not. She is a mother who has had her heart-broken and she acts like it. Shona does bend but she gives him what for as well. Her children provided some laughs, I admit I enjoyed them because sometimes I groan when I see kids in books, but this one was done well.

So in short Warrior's Moon can be read as standalone, book one still my fav, the saga continues for the Chrechte (the shifters) but not between Shona and Caelis, they get their HEA, Caelis bounces back from his dark deeds in the previous books.

Come, Holy Spirit: Sermons, by Karl Barth

Synopsis: "These sermons were prepared from 1920 to 1924. Professor Barth preached some of them while he was minister of the Reformed congregation in Safenwil, Canton Aargau, Switzerland; others in the Reformed Church in Goettingen while he was professor of theology in the University. Pastor Thurneysen at that time preached to the congregation in Bruggen, near St. Gall, Switzerland. The sermons were written not for special occasions but for the regular Sunday morning service, and were addressed to such men and women as one will find in any village or city church--to men and women in the struggle for life, waiting and seeking for God. "Pastor Thurneysen selected the sermons and arranged them according to a scheme that may be indicated by the words Promise, Christ, Christian Living." --from the Translator's Preface Author Biography: Karl Barth (1886-1968) the Swiss Reformed professor and pastor, was once described by Pope Pius XII as the most important theologian since Thomas Aquinas. As principal author of The Barmen Declaration, he was the intellectual leader of the German Confessing Church--the Protestant group that resisted the Third Reich. Barth's teaching career spanned nearly ve decades. Removed from his post at Bonn by the Nazis in late 1934, Barth moved to Basel where he taught until 1962. Among Barth's many books, sermons, and essays are the Epistle to the Romans, Humanity of God, Evangelical Theology, and Church Dogmatics. Eduard Thurneysen (1888-1974) was a pastor in a Swiss town near where Barth was pastor, and they worked out dialectical theology together. He was later Professor of Theology at Zurich."

They cannot be easily comprehended, because they are so different in form ...
By David L. Carroll
The Translators' Preface states in part "These sermon's are not popular, clever, eloquent pulpit discourses such as the modern audience is accustomed to hear and to applaud. They probably would not receive large space in an American Monday morning newspaper. They cannot be easily comprehended, because they are so different in form and content from any sermons that have ever been published in this or any other age. They must be read and pondered, reread and pondered again, until the truth in them becomes spirit and life in the reader."

I have found this to be my experience and it is one of my must treasured books.

It serves a function within the whole, but does not deliver in KB's typical ability to teach and edify at once. These thoughts just don't sparkle in the way Barth is won't to sparkle.

Philosophy of Education in Action: An Inquiry-Based Approach, by David W. Nicholson

Philosophy of Education in Action is an innovative, inquiry-based introductory text that invites readers to study philosophy of education through the lens of their own observations and experiences. Structured according to a "Wonder Model of Inquiry," each chapter begins by posing a fundamental What if question about curriculum, pedagogy, and the role of the school before investigating the various philosophical perspectives that guide and influence educational practices. Classroom vignettes and examples of actual schools and educational programs help to ground philosophical perspectives in real-world scenarios, while the book’s unique inquiry-based approach leads students to both think critically about philosophical questions and apply the concepts to their own teaching.

Features of the text include:

  • What if questions that structure each chapter to pique students' curiosity, stimulate creativity, and promote critical thinking.
  • Authentic classroom vignettes that encourage students to analyze what it means to "do" philosophy and to reflect upon their own practices, examine their role in the educational process, and articulate their own philosophical beliefs.
  • A concluding section asking readers to imagine and design their own hypothetical school or classroom as a project-based means of analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating the different philosophies discussed.

Accessible and thought-provoking, Philosophy of Education in Action provides a dynamic learning experience for readers to understand and apply philosophy in educational practice.

Review

"Nicholson offers a tidy introduction to philosophy of education. The invitation to 'wonder' provides an intellectually stimulating approach to both understanding various philosophic traditions and for practicing the art of philosophizing about education. Readers, especially educators and teacher candidates, will find the extensive focus on thorny contemporary issues of education particularly refreshing and insightful." --Desmond Ikenna Odugu, Education Department, Lake Forest College, USA
