A must read for men that want to get better at dating!

I first heard of Mehow through David Deangelo's monthly CD "Interviews with Dating Gurus". It is very clear from the onset that Mehow is a definitive Pickup Artist or PUA that can help any man increase his chances for success with women that they want & desire. The book describes how Mehow was not in tune with the female species and how he was an Average Frustrated Chump(AFC) before he swallowed his pride & sought help. It was then that he learned some of his pickup techniques through Mystery of the popular VH1 reality show; "The Pickup Artist". Utilizing the "Mystery Method" that Mystery taught him through "Bootcamp/Seminar" he was trying to learn the concepts of the "Dating game". Through trial & error along with countless of hours in the "field" Mehow finally "cracked the code on being successful with women. You have to bring "Value" to the table when encountering women. He gives various openers (lines you say to women from the onset) and teases that will flip the attraction switches in these ladies. Mehow also talks briefly about the world of Pickup & Pickup Artists, specifically how there is a lot of hate & anger not just among the non-seduction community, but among the various Pickup Artists. With the rise of the use of cellphones, Mehow discusses "Phone Game" & "Text Game" that should be utilized when pursing the beautiful woman of your dreams. Bottomline: Mehow is a very good Pickup Artist, and this book can help any man (should they apply the techniques & concepts to help find the woman of their dreams. I liked it so much, I just might have to attend his bootcamp!

A Dissenting View

I am surprised this book has gotten positive reviews. I find it overly complex, wordy, hopelessly nerdy, and idiosyncratic. Whatever the hell Mehow, the author, is talking about might work for him; I doubt it will work for most guys. I'm not even sure most guys would know what he was talking about.

The truth is that successfully approaching, attracting and dating beautiful women is not that complicated. A few simple principles (and a few standard maneuvers) are all you need. For that reason, I dislike that this book keeps guys in The Nerd Zone by talking about things like "simultaneous and sequential" "Microloops" inside of "Master Loops" (what the hell...?). What nerds really need is to man up, take care of themselves, and get an intriguing, awesome life. Do that, and the ladies will come, as sure as moths to light.

For those interested in boosting their success with the ladies, here are a few simple, but powerful, tips from a 46 year old guy who's spent the last five (post-divorce) years dating the most beautiful young ladies you can imagine, most of whom were in their mid-twenties, well-educated, and successful, despite the fact I was low on money because of the divorce:

1.) Be CLEAN and presentable (shower, use anti-perspirant, strategically groom, use *light* cologne, brush and floss teeth, get something going with your hair, lose the coke-bottle glasses, get some sun, etc.);

2.) Be FIT (you don't need to be ripped - only fit. Reduce sugars and grains, and then either hit the gym three times a week following a weightlifting program, or join Crossfit);

3.) Wear well-fitting clothes and good shoes. The clothes don't need to be high-end name brand (not that that would hurt). However, they do need to accentuate your overall look, and show that you are a man who takes care of himself, and respects himself. If you need help choosing clothes, find a couple of hot girls to go shopping with you. (Also, when in doubt, err on the side of a closer, snugger fit);

4.) Develop an awesome, interesting life, full of passions and hobbies which excite you (aside from video games and computers), and which you could invite a special woman to participate in. Also develop a moral code you live by. For example, you might decide to never lie, or always keep your promises, or never cheat on a woman, etc. (One important benefit of this personal development is that your confidence will naturally grow, so that you cease becoming emotionally dependent on the validation of women. Your emotional strength and independence constitute a powerful attractant.);

5.) Be discriminating about women based on a clear idea of your morals, self-respect, and desires. A pretty face is just a pretty face. Let women know (as you get to know them) in a polite way what your standards are. Signal to them that you're interested in knowing whether there is anything more to them than just physical beauty (and mean it). If the woman fails to meet your standards, let her know (as kindly, but firmly, as possible) and give her a chance to step up, and if she fails, move on. Life is too short to waste on brats, no matter how hot they are;

6.) If you want an awesome woman and an awesome relationship, YOU should set the pace of your progress based on your vision for your joint future, and the extent to which you choose to include the lucky lady in your now-awesome life. In other words, do NOT signal that you're ready to jump into the sack with her as soon as possible. Instead, get to know her, hear her stories, make her laugh, build a foundation of trust, comfort, and (yes) friendship (if you play it right, you'll never be in the "friend zone", and the friendship will serve as the most effective base for your romantic relationship), etc., while signaling to her that you indeed are interested in her at a visceral level (and want to keep on going deeper and deeper with her), but that she also needs to *earn* access to your intimacy. Let her show you she's worthy of your attention and your love and devotion; and if she does...give her your gifts, and blow her mind, and she will worship you;

7.) Lots more I could say here, but remember that the most important thing in this process is for *you* to assume the ultimate responsibility for - and develop the power to create - *powerful, shared, emotional experiences between the two of you*. There are hundreds of ways to do that - the right story at the right time, the right little touch on the arm, the right weekend adventure, sharing your big vision of the future at the right time, leaving her a little note when she's not expecting it, enjoying little in-jokes between you, or showing her your intense, varied, creative lovemaking approaches, etc. Rather than trying to reason with her, stay primarily grounded in appeals to her most primal self, her most basic senses and longings and needs, creating those powerful, shared emotional experiences as you go, and you'll do great - even without whatever a "simultaneous and sequential microloop" is.

Quite honestly....This book was very entertaining and highly useful for the single guy! I would say to any guy that would read is this: BE YOURSELF! Whether you're shy, odd, weird....whatever...and utilize the tools and work that's being given to you inside of this book!!! IT DOES INDEED WORK, just don't try to hard at making it work. There is a such thing as being tactful. This is a fantastic read....BUY IT!!!

Lauren Gilley is superb!

I love Lauren Gilley's books. Why? It's like she's writing just for me.

o I love a story with well developed characters. I like the details that tell me who they are and how they act and think.
o I like a well developed, logical plot. Built with wonderful characters in realistic settings.
o Because I like the details to build my imagination in a story, I like a book with some length. I rarely read a book with fewer than 200 pages. I'm usually disappointed when I do. I like to live with these characters and the story for a bit of time. I hate new starts.

Lauren Gilley gives me all the things I like. She is an Indie author who writes with such polish -- you'll rarely read something that makes no sense or find misspellings. Not sure who does her editing, but they do a very nice job.

This book, this Walker Family series, is one of my favorites. I've plowed through close to a dozen of her books in the last few weeks. If you want to read something by her, this is a nice place to start.

So, what stands out for me with this one?
1 -- For me, it usually is the characters that suck me in first. This is the case here. Ben is a s***. He is a good looking man, but has those hard edges. Nothing smooth about him, but we like him and understand him almost immediately. Jade is a woman who doesn't seem to care about his hard edges. She is trying to raise her daughter and build her business and is working through the diamond edges of Ben to give her daughter a father. She just hopes Ben can be what her daughter needs. Clara is only five but she is starting to feel some of the rejection coming off her father. Little does she know it isn't because he doesn't care, it's because he cares so much. We get all this in a few early chapters. Sucked in.

2 -- I don't read suspense often. I love it, but it usually takes thought and I rarely have two thoughts to give anything else in my life. One thing that is just so easy about Lauren's writing is that she presents a wonderful story easily. No work required by the reader. It is all nicely laid out. The characters are detailed enough so you know clearly, who they are, how they feel and think, and what made them that way. Likewise, the story is that easy too. Not simple, but easy.

3 -- Clara. I love when I get kids or dogs or other animals in a story. Clara is a sweet little girl and adds to the story and the development of both Ben and Jade. Likewise, you also get a working horse training center. If you read LG's bio, you'll see she is a horse lover and has interest in Dressage. You get a bit of that here. My family has been heavily into horses too .. Reining horses and Cutting horses, so the details she gives us in this area are accurate and interesting. Not too much, but enough to add to the story.

4 -- I love that she's an Indie author. Why? Because she doesn't give us any kind of truncated story so she can make the some publishers required page count. I hate that. I read TONS of books and can see that stuff a mile a way. You are clicking along with a story and all of a sudden you jump ahead 4 months or you get a summarized version of something and you feel shortchanged. You won't find that with any Lauren Gilley book I've read. I hope she can stay out of the clutches of a publisher. Maybe that's a dream she has, but I'm not convinced it is a good thing.

5 -- I'd pay $10 for a book she writes. I don't have to, but would. She is that good. This book was about $4. Well worth the money.

6 -- This books stands alone easily. You see a few characters that are in others in this series, but it definitely isn't necessary to read them all, first. I think, if you read this one, you'll want to read more, just like I did. I feel like I've been chomping through her books as fast as I can and hate I'm reaching the end of the back-list :( I like that I don't have to, but made me WANT to.

A few things to note that aren't outstanding:
1 -- The cover doesn't do much for me.

2 -- Some of her transitions between characters and/or settings as the story developed may not be smooth. Not distracting, but noticeable.

3 -- A few minor spelling issues.

I rarely take the time to write a detailed review anymore. I put this stuff together in about 10 minutes, but I don't always have even 10 minutes. I did it this time because I really love this author. She is on my auto-buy list. I'll buy anything she writes at any price. I wanted to tell others about her so they can find the joy of her writing. Hopefully you give her a shot.

Citing Sofer's evocative prose, sensitive characterizations, and suspenseful plot, reviewers called Sofer's debut novel persuasive and memorable. Though she ruminates on themes of faith, love, and the heavy toll of political and religious oppression, Sofer's honesty and balanced outlook prevent the story from lapsing into sensational melodrama or lurid allegory. Her descriptions of torture, though vivid, are not gratuitously violent. A few small complaints included some contrived dialogue and Parviz's annoying self-pity, but critics agreed that these do not detract from an otherwise "powerful, timely book" (Rocky Mountain News).

Sofer's enlightening debut opens with the 1981 arrest of Isaac Amin, a Jewish businessman in Iran accused of being a Zionist spy. His arrest was not unexpected. Isaac has seen neighbors and family members disappear and knows the remnants of the shah's entourage—businessmen and communist rebels alike—are seen as enemies by the Revolutionary Guards. Sofer illuminates the horrific details of Isaac's months in prison and deftly captures how that experience affects the rest of his family—his wife and daughter Shirin at home and son Parviz in New York, where he has quickly fallen from son of a wealthy man to starving shop boy. In the midst of their depressing circumstances, the author nestles small jewels of hope, like the delivery of leftovers by the wife of Parviz's landlord, or the repaired shoes, picked up weeks late by Shirin, waiting patiently for Isaac's feet to fill them once again. A nuanced tale of political and religious repression

This is an excellent first novel. Dalia Sofer tells the story of the Amin family, a wealthy Iranian-Jewish family caught up in the ugly repression that followed the overthrow of the shah, in a quiet, dignified style, with detail building upon detail. Jeweler Isaac Amin is snatched from his home and imprisoned by the Revolutionary Guards, for no other reason than the fact that he is affluent and Jewish. His efforts to convince his captors that he is no Israeli spy and end his Kafkaesque tortures and interrogations are described very convincingly.

Particularly notable are Sofer's efforts to portray the ideology of Amin's captors and their sympathizers and to give them a chance to speak for themselves. She does not countenance political murder, religious repression, or anti-semitism, far from it, and her sympathies are with the oppressed; but she does give her villains a voice. Why are some people the masters and some the servants? Was the Iranian upper class complicit in the repression conducted by the shah's goons before his overthrow? These are some of the questions that she asks and these help give the book considerable nuance.

I would have given this book five stars, but the ending failed to satisfy the emotional build-up of the previous 100 pages. The book seemed to peter out rather than to end in a meaningful way.

Lyrical Debut Novel

I purchased this book after seeing positive reviews in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. This is one of the best books I've read, with tight yet lyrical language that enabled me, someone who's never been to Iran or been in a situation akin to that the Amin family faced, to enter their world and understand their changing feelings and actions. The characters were powerfully drawn, and the reader feels empathy for the dilemmas faced by Isaac, the imprisoned father, Farnaz, his somewhat estranged wife, Shirin, the daughter, and Parviz, the son so far away. And despite the tragic events, we see growth in how the characters see themselves and relate to each other. This book richly deserves the positive reviews it has received, and I wish Ms. Sofer a long and productive career!

This novel is a poignant tale of a family caught in the changing of the guard, transported into a world where their every move is suspect. On one uneventful day in 1981, after the Iranian revolution, gem trader Isaac Amin is arrested by the Revolutionary Guards in his Tehran office and transported to prison, where he is interrogated. As a Jew, Amin is immediately suspect, especially since his lucrative business takes him frequently to Israel. Now his entire world is threatened, the government suspicious that he is a spy for Israel. It doesn't help that Amin's brother has been smuggling alcohol over the border, in strict defiance of the law. Muslim fanaticism is on the rise, Isaac's family in the crosshairs, as Jews and because of their wealthy lifestyle.

While Isaac is left in a dank cell with other men, all to be systematically interrogated, he ponders the viability of ever leaving this place, let alone surviving the increasingly brutal interrogation techniques used to obtain the desired responses form the prisoners. Daily he listens to the firing squads, the moans from fellow prisoners who have been tortured and the muezzin's call to prayer. Regretting that he could not inform his wife, Farnaz, of his dire circumstances, Amin looks inward, revisiting the early days of their marriage, before they became careless of the relationship. Learning of her husband's fate, Farnaz is thrust into despair, fighting the depression that overwhelms her whenever she considers life without Isaac, navigating the days as if a sleepwalker.

Nine-year-old Shirin is told at first that her father is on an extended trip; but she is aware of her mother's anguish and seeks to alleviate Farnaz' pain by hoarding her own fears, hiding files she has stolen from the home of a friend whose father works for the Revolutionary Guards. Meanwhile, Parviz, the son attending college in New York, battles his own intense isolation in the city, waiting for money from home that never arrives. In coded phone calls, Parviz understands that his father is in jeopardy, the future uncertain. Each family member endures this painful isolation, existing in a sort of stasis, unsure how to resolve their dilemma, escaping the frightening circumstances of their days by remembering softer, kinder times, the Septembers of Shiraz.

The very fabric of their lives destroyed by the revolution, Isaac is inextricably tied to the shah's regime; there is literally no future for this family save escape. It is that painful truth that so defines the daily activities of each: Isaac's delivery into the hands of his torturers, desperate to avoid the fate of his fellow prisoners; Farnaz' gradual acceptance of a future without the luxuries she has long taken for granted, vaguely threatened but unable to take action; Shirin's theft of the dossiers that may bring swift and brutal repercussions to her doorstep; the once-loyal house servant who makes increasingly critical judgments of her employers and may be a spy; and Parviz' longing for family connections far from those he loves. Mostly there, but obviously not reviewed by Steve Vai

I'm nowhere near the level of Steve Vai on guitar, but I like to get his tab books to see what he's doing and try to learn some of it. That said, after reviewing this book against the recordings, it's pretty close. However, one song that really sticks out to me as not correct (at least how it is written) is Gravity Storm. There are a ton of notations for using the bar when I know for a fact Steve plays this almost all with bends. I was standing a foot away from him in a sound check, and took a video of him, playing Gravity Storm and he used the bar once during the entire song. He even talks about this song in interviews and how it was like a workout for his hand because of all of the bending. My point is, it may sound close, but it's not what he's actually playing. That leads me to question the accuracy of rest of the book.

Worth the buy

I Pre-ordered the book, and I received it perfectly on time.

A few notes about the book, it appears that the transcription was done by a very talented transcriber, but he/she did not have any background experience with Vai's work. It very well takes into account the proper fingering positions to achieve the desired tones, and I have yet to find a true error (in terms of the note being wrong, not taking into account the techniques used) in the music, but there are abundant errors within the tabs itself, stemming from the aforementioned techniques. Vai has made a strong point of the use of his pre-bending to make a Dive sound during Gravity Storm, emphasizing that the recording guitar was incapable of instantly-applied modulation of tuning via the Whammy bar (it didn't have a tremolo system installed). He did make heavy use of the Whammy pedal later in that same song though, so I guess I can see why the Transcriber would have been confused. (but only if he/she has never heard of Steve Vai.)

Like I said, I haven't yet found an error in the notes represented, and it doesn't look rushed. Overall, its a great piece of work that deserves your attention!

Almost gets full stars.

About the Author
DAVID HOWARD-PITNEY has taught American history and American studies at San Jose State University and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. He is now professor and history department chair of De Anza College. He worked at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Papers Project at Stanford University in 1986 and from 2000 to 2002 was a commissioned scholar for the Public Influences of African American Churches Project of the Leadership Center at Morehouse College. A specialist on American civil religion and African-American leaders' thought and rhetoric, Howard-Pitney's publications include The African-American Jeremiad: Appeals for Justice in America.

Malcolm and Martin

This book presents the differences between arguably the two most famous civil rights activists of the fifties and sixties, as well as showing the convergence between their ideas and ideals toward the end of thier respective lives. It is readable, succinct and thorough. I highly recommend this book, especially to anyone who will be teaching this period in history to middle or high school students.

Great Addition to Your Critical Thinking Syllabus

Matin Luther King was not only the most important figure in American religious history in the 20th century, he was arguably its most brilliant polemicist. Malcolm X came closer than any social reformer in history to embodying and articulating the totality of the African experience in America.
Pitney-Howard's immaculately documented study comes closest to a balanced and accurate portrait of their relationship as leaders and seekers of justice on both the existential (personal) and universal (as world teachers) levels. With a well-organized and comprehensive selection of their most significant statements, we have an unsurpassed teaching tool for this most signal moment in the history of ideas and social dialog. Further, the book is svelte, inexpensive, and accessible to for the majority of undergraduate level students.
An incredibly valuable effort here, both within and beyond the classroom, an integral part of my critical thinking courses, which blessedly focuses on the crucial last years in the lives of these larger than life, but quintissentially human figures.

Interesting Read

The author's organization of the information he had was solid. Having to read this book as an over-worked college student, it was difficult to get through. I found the reversal of attitudes and roles between the two men intriguing. If you're a big civil rights buff or want to know more about these two figure heads, this is the book. If you're looking for something to assign to your honors level students... well, not so much :) (we read this book after Anne Moody's Coming of Age in Mississippi, the contrast is what ruined it for me I think.)

Do not buy from here

They said book was in perfect condition, and there is Asian writing above every sentence in the book. Someone from China must have taken this class and wrote above every sentence in their language to help them. EVERY SENTENCE has blue hieroglyphics above it! I want to insert a picture to help you understand how bad this is. In between every line there is Chinese symbols. I want to get my money back, but cant go with out a book. So please spend 3 dollars more and get it from a more honest seller. They will tell you whatever to get it off their shelves.
