For instance, beginning a second round of pegging play it is pone's lead with two cards remaining to choose from, a six (6) and a ten (10). Dealer also has two remaining cards. Which card does Pone lead, the six or the ten? The correct response is the six, but why? Because if pone leads the ten, the dealer can play a six and since pone has only a six remaining, dealer could score a triple for a seven point pegging play if dealer has a third six. But, if pone leads the six then the dealer can only pair the six and inasmuch as the pone's remaining ten card will take the running count to 22, that ten card cannot be paired. Thus, the dealer's pegging potential has been held in check. It is a form of damage control.

An Easy Excellent!

I played cribbage many years ago and finally met up with someone who missed the game as well. Although we were a little rusty we started playing once a week and have introduced the game to a few others.
The book is well written and EASY to understand. It lays the game out in a simple organized fashion, explains basic scoring a novice would understand and addresses strategy and play for the more advanced players. Something for everyone at every level of play. I did not "get" the "confusing" English others had mentioned. It seemed pretty straight forward to me.

Awesome book to learn from AND apply to the game of cribbage. I am getting better and that makes me feel GREAT!!!!

Great book on cribbage. The strategy offered by J. T. Best is understandable,clear and concise for my little brain and I have begun besting the computer playing the medium challenge. I just began playing the game 2 months ago but have wanted to for years. I want to become a much better player so I feel that a book for the beginner to grandmaster should be the very BOOK I need. I also have the book by Frank and Simon Butler (How to Play and Win) so I consider myself armed for bear. As I stated in my assessment of "The Butlers" book all I need now is to have a person to talk back to so that I might become better at pegging with no Muffins. Thank you J. T. Best.

Well worth the time

Not really for beginners, this book is worth the time and effort for the novice who wants to learn to play cribbage well. While it does explain the basics of the game, it really become valuble for the player who can already count and peg points. Be prepared to do some studying if you want to get the most from this short book.

Essential reading for audio afficionados

I approach this book as an audiophile interested in getting more educated about the science and principles of loudspeaker design and behavior. It is truly excellent for that. I have no intent to design my own loudspeakers or become an acoustics expert, and the book is written well for such a non-professional audience.

The book is mostly geared towards recording engineers for whom loudspeakers are essential tools of the trade, but who normally do not have a solid grasp of the physics and engineering of loudspeakers. Unlike many other books and articles on speakers, there are few equations and formulas here. The language is easy to follow, and there are plenty of illustrations and charts to help you understand.

There is sort of a religious debate in the high end audio community between subjectivists (trust only your ears, any part of the sound system matters a lot) and objectivists (everything is measurable, and all competently designed components sound similar). This book sheds light in both directions and shows where they fall short.

Some of the more controversial and interesting bits of the book are about how amplifiers can sound different, and how cables can change the sound depending on amplifier and speaker design. There apparently has been some scientific research on this. The amplifier-cable-crossover-driver system is apparently very complex, and certain designs are much more idiosyncratic to the point where small changes (e.g. different cable) can make an audible and measurable difference.

There are references to a bunch of other books and articles if you want to dig deeper. The authors refer a lot to Floyd Toole's articles and his recent book on acoustics which I recently read and reviewed on Amazon: Sound Reproduction: The Acoustics and Psychoacoustics of Loudspeakers and Rooms which is also recommended reading.

I highly recommend this book to all serious audio enthusiasts!

Review of Loudspeakers For Music Recording and Reproduction

"Loudspeakers For Music Recording and Reproduction" is simply excellent. Philip Newell and Keith Holland have produced a comprehensive book that discusses many issues that are not covered in other books.

Whilst giving insights into the behaviour of loudspeaker transducers and systems, it also gives an understanding of the broader issues that underpin the design of loudspeaker systems and the qualities of the sound that they produce. The book is sufficiently comprehensive and detailed to be deemed a reference text, but it is written in such a readable way that it gives the reader an excellent grasp of the complex processes that govern how electrical energy is converted to sound at the listeners ears.

Newell and Holland deal with parameters that are directly associated with loudspeaker systems; amplifiers, cables, transducers, crossovers, enclosures, location relative to room boundaries, room acoustics and some psycho-acoustics.

This is not a cookbook giving design instructions or equations; this information can be found in many other texts and technical papers. The book's strength is its discussion of the technical factors that affect the quality of sound heard by the listener; this information is not readily found is such depth. It gives the reader a good handle on the things that really matter in the electro-acoustic and acoustic domains of sound reproduction.

Newell and Holland have conducted extensive research over the years into loudspeaker responses and room acoustics and have an excellent ability to bust audio myths with technical arguments that are grounded in real world application. They are regular presenters at academic and professional conferences, and this book contains a great deal of their work.

Noteworthy is the extensive discussion on their recent research on the audibility of phase delay and loss of modulation at low frequencies due to the loudspeaker's low frequency alignment and room acoustic properties.

I whole-heartedly endorse this book, and recommend it both to serious scholars of loudspeaker systems and to others who desire an enjoyable read about state of the art thinking about loudspeaker reproduction.

It is certainly part of my library.

About the Author
Norman Marks, CPA, CRMA is a semi-retired chief audit executive and chief risk officer. He is a globally-recognized thought leader in the professions of risk management and internal auditing and remains an evangelist for “better run business”, focusing on corporate governance, risk management, internal audit, enterprise performance, and the value of information. He is also a mentor to individuals and organizations around the world. Norman has been honored as a Fellow of the Open Compliance and Ethics Group and an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Risk Management for his contributions to risk management. He is the author of three earlier books: • World-Class Internal Audit: Tales from my Journey • Management’s Guide to Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404: Maximize Value Within Your Organization (described as “the best Sarbanes-Oxley 404 guide out there for management”), and • How Good is your GRC? Twelve Questions to Guide Executives, Boards, and Practitioners. Praise for Norman’s last book, on world-class internal auditing, includes: • “I thoroughly enjoyed Norman's book. My one regret is not buying it in hard copy, so I could tab it, highlight it, scribble in the margins, etc. It's the type of book I keep on my desk, available for quick reference or inspiration when the need arises. In his Introduction, Norman states his hope in writing World-Class Internal Audit is that it "...will amuse as well as provide some insights..." and that he wrote the book to "...stimulate some thinking..." Great thinking on enterprise risk management

Norman Marks’ latest book “World-Class Risk Management” (2015) is a must read for anyone interested in this evolving topic. It will appeal to the beginner as it leads one from the basics through the various concepts and techniques, while it challenges the most serious practitioner to re-evaluate what they do and why. The academic will also benefit from using this book because of the exhaustive references to some of the best source material on this topic. Norman challenges many stereotypical and clichéd views on risk management, but keeps coming back to simple, easy to understand concepts. He captures the essence of his thinking in “The management of risk is an essential element in successful management.” (page 13). This book makes you think, yet it is written in a lucid and friendly style. His thinking on ‘risk appetite’ challenges some ‘sacred cows’ held by many, but will help those who have struggled with this concept to find better ways of approaching this controversial subject. I wish he had written more on risk workshops but that may be another book someday. Well done, Norman, and thank you for sharing your experience, research and thinking.

Very good critical review of risk management frameworks and practices

I've just finished reading the book and decided to share my opinion, because the book and the author are worth it.
To my mind, the book is perfect if you want to know more what ERM standards are and what kind of controversies they bring to the subject. Norman brilliantly describes many weak points of those standards and highlights good aspects. The book also gives good and comprehensive, although not very detailed, view on the ERM as a discipline. Or at least how it should look like in the best “word-class” companies.
I definitely like in this book constant reference to decision making as a basis for risk management. I fully agree with the notion (in my words), that “abstract” risk management cannot be effective without clear link to decision making (and makers), company goals and strategy. To my mind, there is no even such a standalone process as "risk management" (usually I use the word "metaprocess"). All risks should be analyzed within specific business processes like strategic, operation or tactical planning so as any other. So it’s always some over business process, but not standalone risk management.
The most practical recommendation in the book is to make risk reports in two parts, answering to two separate questions: how likely are we to achieve our objectives and what brings the most uncertainty into it? To my mind the first question is far more important than the second, but not that many risk managers understand it. I definitely like this recommendation because it has the potential to significantly improve acceptance and reliance on risk management practice by executives.
So why not 5 stars? As a person who spent some years developing ERM in different companies I'd expect some new and provoking thoughts on the subject. I believe most of the book can be understood from practice by a thoughtful practitioner. At least, as per my expectations. But the book is a good antidote for any lovers of COSO or ISO. It could be eyes-opening.
