Great blend of bdsm and family drama

I like this writer and was looking forward to this one. Not disappointed at all. Fettered is a lengthy story but I hardly notice it as Dylan's story kept me engaged till the end. Dylan is an interesting character and I enjoy this insecure 19 years old boy's journey of self discovery in the BDSM world. It may be BDSM but there is no nastiness to cringe about (for me anyway). I would have loved to know more about Vin, an intriguing character. I guess this could not be helped as the story is told from Dylan's viewpoint. Like an earlier reviewer I also find Vin's character and role as Dylan's dom belied an older man. On the other hand there are instances when Vin's actions certainly reflect his twenty five years. Theirs is not your typical romance but a dom/sub bond, which both men need. I can certainly see love developing as each man fulfills the other's needs in their dom/sub roles, which I enjoy and find convincing. I also like the BDSM aspects here and the owner of the BDSM club who goes by Dolphinia/Lee is one fantastic secondary character. Certainly every sub newbie needs a Dolphinia/Lee. There is an interesting family drama plot here which keeps me engrossed. This part of the plot could easily be a story by itself and at times feels strange that this part of the story is mixed with the bdsm aspects. On the other hand Dylan’s brother’s monstrous actions are the very catalyst for Dylan to reach out for help in the BDSM world. And he does get more help than he hoped for when Vin adopted Dylan’s family for his very own and helped to set things right in Vin’s own ways. Dylan’s family members are equally well developed secondary characters and it is easy to understand his parents’ flaws. Caring parents enamored by the charming eldest son now forced to face the truth and do something about it. I especially like Dylan’s father. I too hover between 4 and 5 stars for this one. At the end the content of the story, which is different from others, and well developed characters certainly deserves 5 stars.

Leather Culture, D/s, and some emotional family dynamics = winner!

Very good novel about a young, inexperienced sub, Dylan. Vin, the Dom, is not much older (though he seems much older in this book than his age) and he has a past imperfect. Dylan is embroiled in a home life that includes a serial rapist brother, a mother who thinks her kids can do no wrong, a sister with a lot more going on than she says (and she certainly says a LOT!), and a father who is about to have the blinders removed. When you add into that Dolphinia, a cross-dressing leather club owner, you get a mix of people that will make you sit up and take notice.
I enjoyed Dylan - although his submissiveness was strong he did have a very recognizable and distinct voice. I thought Vin was creepy at first - I think primarily because of unexplained past events and his age. He had his own business and he just "felt" so much older. Many (not all) of the 25 year old's I know are not nearly this self assured or confident - but then I don't know anyone in the more leather oriented old-school lifestyle. It felt odd at times to have him have such a event filled past when he was barely out of teens himself. However I still enjoyed his character - particularly how he cared for and understood Dylan.
Dolphinia was a hoot - and a great character to add, well, character!
Overall I very much enjoyed it. I waffled a bit on 4 or 5 and decided I'd round up - really more in between but some real strengths here with the exploration of Leather culture and BDSM (not real explicit but fascinating nonetheless), the way the relationship developed between Vin and Dylan, and the messed up family dynamics (after all what one of us doesn't have some of these in our closet? LOL) it had to go up to the best!

Break it down

Okay, so here's how this went --
Start with 5 stars because this book rocked my socks like nothing has in a long, long time
+ 1 star for the strength of the story line and characterization.
+ 1 star for NOT making this an entry level, 'how-to' and/or 'do not try this at home' version of BDSM. And, in fact, poking enough derisive fun at those BDSM-ers to make me smile in a smug, if juvenile way.
- 1/2 star for the word 'mewl' appearing more than twice in the story. 9 times, in fact. I have no problem with the word in and of itself. Overuse got to me enough to take a little bit longer each time to get past it.
- 1/2 star for the word 'mewl' appearing in dialog. Again, I have no issue with the word like so many people seem to, but I do find it WAY unbelievable that anyone would actually use it in dialog. That TWO people did knocked me right upside the head.
+ 1/2 star for the use of the word 'unctuous.' Made my little nerd brain squee a little bit.
+ 1 star (or 10) for NOT making me read a "he gasped (whimpered, mewled, whatever)as he rolled the condom over his engorged, sensitive cock" sentence in every sex scene. Or any of them, for that matter. Yes, they were safe, for anyone whose back just went up, but not being beaten in the head with it was an awfully nice change of pace.
- 1/2 star for the superfluous sex scenes.
+ 1/2 star for the hotness of the superfluous sex scenes.
- 1/2 star for the stretch of believability of a Dom being SO good -- like a far too seasoned pro -- at only 25.
+ 1/2 star for the glimpses of vulnerability in said Dom that made him real and lovably possessive.
+ 6 or so stars for Dylan. What a boy. *sigh*
I am kicking myself for not having read this author sooner. I shall be remedying that ASAP.
